Is it just me? Has a huge part of my brain just been freed up from worrying about when the DJ software i’m using is next going to crash?
As a now international DJ, I started my ‘spinning the decks’ journey around the time that the put the needle on the record, vinyl vs CD debate was being won by ‘antishock’ CD, I actually do remember stumbling across this amazing picce of software back in the day called Soundtracker! After hijacking my mates Amiga A1200 (I think that was the model) for 29 hours a day, I soon realised that the ‘You got it’ sample did not really need to be in every composition. I also realised that if they could make me explore the Simon Harris side of my brain making me feel like a fully fleged record producer, how long would it be before I could hook my Denon CD players up to the computer and spin like Carl Cox from my collection of music?
Over the next few years the work horse that carried the musical experience evloved into MP3 and after initially being a sceptic, I eventually got over the loss of quality at 128MBS when 192MBS became the norm I would of course be spinning from MP3 / Wav reading CD players, no record crates or CD cases required.
And then enters PCDJ! This was my first experience of software that I could organise my wealth of music as well as spin from. I was lucky that a couple places I would DJ at already had these systems installed and I soon managed to get a copy for my PC at home, yes I remember bringing my desktop PC to a couple of events!!!
If you have been DJing a while you know what comes next i.e laptops, USB sticks, 320MBS MP3’s, 1TB storage, VIRTUAL DJ, TRAKTOR and finally for me anyway Rane’s SERATO the SERATO DJ PRO. Although they are all different they are indevidually great pieces of indespensable DJ software and right now depending on which one you use as you main application suitable for the professional and amateur enthusiast or bedroom DJ.
It just popped into my head that I only sold my Numark CDN 34S a couple years ago, wow!!!
Oops i’m out of time, the next gig beckons…pt2 coming soon.
